The Johnson Family and Durham Building Company
Tasha and her family are partnering with Durham Building Company to build a Habitat Blitz home. Thanks to the efforts of Durham Building Company and their builders the home will be built in one week!
Meet Tasha
What does Tasha’s Habitat home mean to her?
“For me, it represents grace.”
Grace from some very difficult decisions that she has faced in recent years. For a number of years, Tasha was living in a one bedroom apartment with her two children, Summer (7) and Corey (8). She was forced to move out of this small space due to occupancy regulations and into a bigger, more expensive apartment. This keeps keeps her on a very tight, and sometimes unpredictable, budget. Financial stability is something she’s seeking with Habitat.
“I’m tired of throwing away my money on rent”, Tasha says. “I want to be able to do more for my children.”
As a Lead Teacher with Little People Day Care, Tasha has the opportunity to meet families from all over Durham. A few of those families are Habitat homeowners. In fact, Tasha’s Director at Little People Day Care has attended several Habitat home dedications. Tasha shared that it was her Director at work who encouraged her to apply to Durham Habitat.
Tasha’s life is very full. She works a full time job during the day while also taking night classes at Durham Tech. She is pursuing her degree in Early Childhood Education. This hasn’t stopped her from diligently working on her sweat equity volunteer hours, the “down payment” on her Habitat home. She’s out at the Habitat work site every Saturday, picking up a hammer or working the chop saw.
She’s grateful that her mom is able to help her by watching her children while she does her volunteer work with Habitat. Family is such an important part of Tasha’s Habitat story. “My kids will get to ride their bikes outside once we move in. Right now, the road we live on is too busy and I don’t feel like it’s safe for them to go out.”
Grace. The grace of family, of hard work, of persistence. The grace of home.
We are so proud to partner with Tasha and her family and can’t wait to see the future that is built with this stable environment to call home. We invite you to join a Durham Habitat partnership.
