MLK Day of Service

MLK Day of Service honors Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy by turning his dream of justice and community into action. Each year, volunteers come together to serve, build, and uplift our neighborhoods—creating lasting change through small acts of kindness and collaboration.

At Durham Habitat, we celebrate this day by working side by side to help families and strengthen our community—because service is how we keep Dr. King’s vision alive all year long.

The event takes place annually on the third Monday in January, and is the only federal holiday observed as a National Day of Service. We serve and celebrate together to support our community and move us closer to Dr. King’s vision of a Beloved Community. We encourage you take a ‘day on’ today rather than a day off.

Women Build

Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build program empowers women from all backgrounds to come together to build, fundraise, and advocate for safe, affordable housing in our community. Through this initiative, women gain hands-on experience and make a tangible impact—helping families build strength and stability through homeownership.

Each year, Habitat affiliates across the country take part in National Women Build Week, held in early March in celebration of International Women’s Day (March 8). This week challenges women to dedicate at least one day to support the mission of affordable housing.

At Durham Habitat, Women Build isn’t limited to just one week—we offer volunteer shifts and special events throughout the year, providing ongoing opportunities for women to lead and serve in building stronger communities.

March Women’s Build 2027: Women’s Build Week

Pride Build

Each year on the first Saturday in June, we come together for our Pride Build — a celebration of community, inclusion, and the ongoing work of building a more equitable future.

In partnership with local LGBTQIA+ organizations, allies, and volunteers, we build alongside Habitat homebuyers while honoring and uplifting Durham’s LGBTQIA+ community. It’s a day of action, celebration, and solidarity — and everyone is welcome.

9/11 Build

Each year, September 11 serves as a National Day of Service and Remembrance, honoring the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, as well as the first responders, volunteers, military personnel, and countless individuals who answered the call to serve in the days and years that followed.

For Durham Habitat for Humanity, participating in a 9/11 Build is a way to honor that legacy through action. Volunteers come together to help build or improve safe, affordable homes for local families, turning a day of remembrance into a day of service and community connection.

Through construction, critical home repairs, and volunteer service, Durham Habitat believes that strong communities are built when neighbors work together. A 9/11 Build gives volunteers an opportunity to remember, serve, and help create safe places where Durham families can build a stronger future.

Veterans Build

While Habitat is best known for building affordable homes, this year’s Veterans Build will focus on helping veterans stay safely in their homes through critical home repairs. For nearly two decades, Durham Habitat has repaired homes for families facing economic hardship, ensuring that everyone — especially those who’ve served — can live safely, independently, and with dignity.

Durham Habitat’s Home Repair Program assists homeowners earning below 50% of the Area Median Income (AMI), correcting conditions that pose an imminent threat to life, safety, or accessibility. The program helps preserve Durham’s existing affordable housing stock while allowing residents — including veterans — to age in place with dignity.

This year, Durham Habitat aims to raise $15,000 to complete two critical home repairs for local veterans. These repairs may include improvements to plumbing, roofing, ramps and railings, HVAC, flooring, porches, gutters, and more, addressing safety and accessibility challenges that prevent our veteran homeowners from aging in place.

Sponsorship Tiers

Team Build Sponsorship

To help cover construction costs, we ask companies to sponsor a Team Build Day. Sponsorship levels vary based on group size:

 Includes team recognition in event communications, lunch, and T-shirt sponsorship.

Lunch Sponsorship – $300

Your $300 sponsorship provides lunch for volunteers and staff on a build day, keeping our team energized as we build in honor of those who’ve served. Includes recognition at lunch and in event communications.

T-Shirt Sponsorship – $500

Every volunteer who joins us for the Veterans Build wears a shirt in honor of the day. Your $500 sponsorship covers the design and printing of volunteer t-shirts for the week, giving your organization visible recognition at the build site and beyond.
