Green Building
Green building principles are integral to Habitat’s construction process.
We strive to minimize our environmental impact while building high quality, energy-efficient homes with our partner families.
Habitat for Humanity of Durham builds homes using the Advanced Energy SystemVision program, winning state-wide awards for improving indoor air quality and keeping family energy bills low. Durham Habitat is also a member of the Green Home Builders of the Triangle.
WE CONSERVE ENERGY AND WATER
Superior insulation, HVAC systems, windows, appliances, and lighting allow us to conserve energy. On average, our homeowners pay $26 to $34 in monthly utility costs. Installing efficient appliances, plumbing fixtures, and rain barrels allows homeowners to cut water bills.
WE PRESERVE AIR QUALITY AND THE ENVIRONMENT
We make sure our homeowners enjoy clean air by managing HVAC quality and by using materials free of harmful substances. We protect the environment by using recycled materials and by incorporating open space in our site design.
WE USE ENERGY EFFICIENT APPLIANCES
Durham Habitat provides a purchase program for Whirlpool dishwashers, ice makers, washers, and dryers. Whirlpool donates an Energy Star certified refrigerator and stove to every Habitat home built in North America.
