Press Release: Durham Habitat for Humanity Celebrates 2026 Women Build Week with Community Partners and Sponsors
Durham, NC — Durham Habitat for Humanity proudly hosted its 2026 Women Build Week, bringing together women from across the community to help build strength, stability, and independence through safe and affordable housing. The weeklong initiative highlighted the power of women working together to address the growing need for affordable housing in Durham.
Women Build is a national Habitat for Humanity initiative that empowers women to take an active role in building homes and stronger communities. Since 1991, Women Build volunteers from all walks of life have united across the United States to support families through hands-on construction and repair projects. At Durham Habitat, Women Build continues to create opportunities for women to learn valuable construction skills while making a meaningful difference in the lives of local families.
The success of the 2026 Women Build was made possible through the generous support of community sponsors including Merck Women’s Network, Wilkinson Supply Company, Elevation Church, and Altered Egos Motorcycle and Social Club. Food sponsors Sofia’s Pizza and Monuts helped fuel volunteers throughout the week, ensuring participants had the energy to build and serve.
Durham Habitat also partnered with the Durham Housing Authority (DHA) to strengthen community engagement and expand the impact of this year’s build efforts. Together, these partnerships reflect a shared commitment to addressing housing challenges and supporting families in Durham.
Women and children are among those most affected by unsafe or unstable housing conditions. Women Build provides an opportunity for participants to take a proactive role in addressing these challenges while supporting neighbors in need. The event also encourages participants to bring friends and family members of all ages, fostering a collaborative and welcoming environment where volunteers can learn new skills and build lasting relationships.
“Women Build is a visible reminder of what is possible when women bring their strength, skill, and heart to the work of community transformation,” said President Nimasheena Burns, President of Durham Habitat for Humanity. “This week was about more than raising walls. It was about raising hope, expanding opportunity, and standing in partnership with families who deserve safe, stable, and affordable places to call home.”
Special thanks also goes to the Durham Habitat Teen Board, who designed and created the signage used during Women Build activities this year, demonstrating the organization’s commitment to engaging the next generation of community leaders.
“There’s nothing like seeing women come together to volunteer and build,” said Kirsten from Durham Habitat’s Volunteer Services team. “Together, we’re making a real impact and helping close the affordable housing gap during this incredible Women Build week.”
Durham Habitat for Humanity remains committed to empowering volunteers, partners, and future homeowners while expanding access to safe and affordable housing across the community. Women Build continues to serve as a powerful reminder that when women come together with purpose and opportunity, they can transform neighborhoods and create lasting change.
