MLK Day of Service
January 20, 2025
Today we celebrate a day of service to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. MLK Day of Service is a national, annual event, that encourages individuals to volunteer and to help improve their communities. AmeriCorps has been charged with leading this effort for 30 years.
The event takes place annually on the third Monday in January, and is the only federal holiday observed as a National Day of Service. We serve and celebrate together to support our community and move us closer to Dr. King’s vision of a Beloved Community. We encourage you take a ‘day on’ today rather than a day off.
Dr. King’s idea of a Beloved Community advocates for a community in which all are respected, cared for, and treated as equals. He believes a Beloved Community is no place for injustice, discrimination, or prejudice. Today is a day for individuals from all walks of life to come together around the country, in support of the common cause of giving back to their communities.
Several groups of individuals, as well as our own AmeriCorps members, are participating in a day of service with Durham Habitat today. We are proud to host volunteer opportunities for such an important event, and we look forward to building together! One home at a time, we strive to create the society Dr. King dreamed of, and come together to build homes, community, and hope.
