Funding will be combined with City of Durham, North Carolina Housing Finance Agency and donor support to preserve affordable housing throughout Durham

DURHAM, N.C. — September 2026 — Habitat for Humanity of Durham has officially closed out its Spring Appeals Campaign benefiting the organization’s Home Repairs Program, raising more than $126,000 to help low-income Durham homeowners make critical health, safety and accessibility improvements to their homes.

The funds raised through the spring campaign will be combined with other public and private resources, including funding from the City of Durham, generous individual and community donors, and the North Carolina Housing Finance Agency’s Urgent Repair Program.

Durham Habitat uses a strategic approach of braiding multiple funding sources together to stretch available resources, address a wide range of repair needs and serve as many Durham homeowners as possible.

“Every dollar entrusted to Durham Habitat allows us to do more than repair a roof, replace a failing HVAC system or build an accessibility ramp—it helps a Durham neighbor remain safely and securely in the home and community they know,” said Nimasheena Burns, President and CEO of Habitat for Humanity of Durham. “With housing costs continuing to rise, preserving the affordable homes that already exist is just as important as building new ones. By bringing together support from our donors, government partners and organizations such as the North Carolina Housing Finance Agency, we can stretch those investments further and help more families age in place with safety, stability and dignity.”

76 Durham Homes Repaired Last Fiscal Year

During the last fiscal year, Habitat for Humanity of Durham completed 76 small and large home repairs for low-income homeowners throughout Durham.

The Repairs Program is designed to help homeowners with limited incomes correct substandard housing conditions that present health, safety or accessibility concerns. Equally important, the program helps protect Durham’s existing affordable housing stock by allowing longtime homeowners to remain in homes they already own.

For older adults and residents with mobility challenges, improvements such as ramps, railings, flooring repairs and other accessibility modifications can make the difference between remaining independently in their homes and being forced to relocate.

“Durham’s affordable housing challenge cannot be addressed through new construction alone,” Burns added. “We also have to protect the homes and homeowners who are already here. A relatively small repair today can prevent a much larger housing crisis for a family tomorrow. That is why this work is such an important part of Durham Habitat’s commitment to building homes, communities and hope.”

Preserving Durham’s Existing Affordable Housing

Durham Habitat’s Repairs Program serves homeowners within Durham County who meet income guidelines and have qualifying health, safety or accessibility repair needs.

Applicants must own and occupy the home for which assistance is requested and provide a completed application along with supporting documentation, including verification of household income, proof of property ownership and other financial information.

Because of high demand and the time required to evaluate, fund and schedule each project, the Repairs Program is not an emergency repair service. Depending on the project and available funding, scheduling and completion may take approximately 12 to 15 months.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, with no application deadline.

Durham Habitat encourages applicants to carefully review all application requirements and submit a complete packet, as incomplete applications cannot be processed.

Community Support Makes the Work Possible

Durham Habitat thanked the individuals, businesses, foundations and community partners who contributed to the Spring Appeals Campaign and continue to invest in the organization’s home repair efforts.

The more than $126,000 raised through the campaign will become part of a larger pool of resources that Durham Habitat strategically combines to maximize its impact.

“Seventy-six repairs in one year represent 76 homeowners and families who received help protecting one of their most important assets—their home,” Burns said. “We are grateful to every donor and partner who understands that preserving affordable homeownership is an investment in families, neighborhoods and the future of Durham.”
