Local professional homebuilders help Durham Habitat build two homes in seven days

Durham, NC. (June 6, 2015 through June 12, 2015) — During Habitat for Humanity’s Home Builders Blitz, Habitat affiliates in 23 states nationwide will partner with their local homebuilders to build, renovate, or repair more than 200 homes.

“Homebuilders have a unique perspective on the importance of a strong, well-developed community, which makes them invaluable partners in Habitat’s work,” said Jonathan Reckford, CEO of Habitat for Humanity International. “And thanks to the generous donation of these builders’ time and talent, hundreds of families will have the opportunity to realize the dream of homeownership.”

Two local Durham homebuilders are joining forces with Durham Habitat for Humanity for the Home Builders Blitz to help build two new homes in East Durham in partnership with two families seeking affordable housing. Durham Habitat acquires the land, develops the sites, provides the house plans and permits, and selects the partner families. Then the socially-minded building companies, Garman Homes and Durham Building Company, call on their regular contractors to cover materials and labor for the two homes. The project is nicknamed Blitz Like A Girl, as two professional women homebuilders take on building both homes from the ground up in just seven days.

Garman Homes’ Alaina Money is building in partnership with the Parrish family. Monica and her two daughters, ten and three years old, are excited to see their home built in just one week. Alaina will be blogging about the home building experience at www.buildlikeagirl.com. She is excited that she and Maggie Douglas, two female builders, can come together and give back to Durham in this way.

Durham Building Company’s Maggie Douglas is building in partnership with the Ni/Ngeh family. “This is the first home I have ever built! I'm not only excited to have it be a Habitat home, but also that it will bring our entire team together for the week, including our vendors who are contributing so much of their time and energy,” Douglas said. “What an honor it is to be a part of this new beginning for two Durham families!” Jaw, his wife, Maw, and their three sons, thirteen, eight, and five years old, will move into the Durham Building Company home this summer.

Construction teams will work around-the-clock in order to dedicate both homes on Friday. Community members are invited to join the builders, contractors, donors, Habitat staff, and the homebuyer families for a home dedication cookout at noon.

Blake Strayhorn, Executive Director of Durham Habitat said, “This partnership with local builders is very exciting for us. It allows us to serve more families in need of affordable housing and celebrates the entire community.”
