Non-construction opportunities

Want to help Habitat but don't believe construction is the right fit?  Habitat has a place for you! Volunteers are critical to more than just building.  Whether you are working in the office or at a special event, you are important to Habitat's mission!

Below is a list of non-construction volunteer needs. Let us know what interests you!

Office Volunteers

Office volunteers keep Habitat of Durham running smoothly behind the scenes. Volunteers work closely with the office staff to keep up with the many administrative tasks necessary to keep us building houses.

  • Office volunteer opportunities are available Tuesday - Friday during business hours (9 a.m.- 5 p.m.) 
  • Must be at least 14 years old
  • Duties may include data entry, mailings, assisting with volunteer recognition, filing and paperwork as well as special projects
  • Requirements include general organization skills and comfort with computers

Special-Event Volunteers

Throughout the year, Habitat hosts one-day events, such as bike rides, home tours, blitz builds and more. These are important opportunities to spread the word about Habitat's mission!  As a special-events volunteer, you could help prepare, work during the event or clean up afterward.

  • Special-event opportunities are available on an as-needed basis .
  • Times vary based on the event and activity.
  • Volunteers must be at least 14 years old.
  • Duties may include: decorating, making signs, setting up tables and chairs, signing in participants, serving food and drink, greeting guests, picking up trash and directing traffic.
  • Skill requirements include willingness to participate in many kinds of activities and an interest in spreading the word about Habitat.

Special events are a good one-day opportunity for people who want to volunteer with Habitat but don't have a lot of time to spare.

Welcome Volunteers to the Work Site

Help our construction volunteers feel like a valuable part of our Habitat team. Welcome construction volunteers to the worksite and provide them with everything they need to make sure they have a safe and pleasant experience. Get to know the people who are making a difference in your community by making a difference in their lives.

Committee Volunteers

Habitat has a number of committees that are looking for community volunteers. This is way for people who are already interested in Habitat to learn more about its day-to-day functions and make a deeper commitment to building homes, hope and community in Durham.

Habitat ReStore Volunteers

Located at 5501 Durham-Chapel Hill Blvd. (next to Bob Evan's in the old Havertys building) in Durham, the ReStore is a non-profit function of Habitat for Humanity.  The ReStore accepts donations of furniture, house wares, appliances and building and construction materials.  The store sells these items to the general public.  Sale proceeds are donated to Habitat of Durham and Habitat of Orange County to further the mission of building quality, affordable homes.  

Currently, the ReStore is looking especially for volunteers who can commit to at least two shifts per month.  Shifts are generally either 10 am to 2 pm OR 2 pm to 6 pm.  However, one-time, short-term and group volunteers are also welcomed.

Volunteers opportunities at the ReStore:

  • Donations processing (accepting, sorting, cleaning, testing and/or pricing)
  • Customer service (greeting, merchandising, and/or cashiering)
  • Office administration (answering phones, entering data, and/or filing)
  • General maintenance
