Age requirements

General construction volunteers must be at least 16 years old. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old to climb above 6 feet and operate power tools.

Groups

Want to bring a group to volunteer? Feel free to check availability using our online scheduling tool (linked above). We can usually accommodate groups of up to 10 volunteers per site per shift. To accomodate larger groups, we will probably need to split your group over multiple shifts or multiple sites.

Complete this form or contact Laine  if you'd like to reserve space for your group of 5 or more volunteers.

Tasks

Duties may include, but are not limited to, deconstruction, crawlspace sealing, wall framing, roofing, siding, interior and exterior trim, painting, cleaning, and landscaping.

All tools and supplies will be provided. You are welcome to bring your own hand tools if you want to.

No tools, skills or experience is necessary. You can volunteer as an individual or bring a group out.

Shifts

We host construction volunteer opportunities on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays year-round.

Two construction shifts are available:

8:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
12:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Parking

On-street parking is available at most locations. We ask that you are mindful of not blocking driveways or mailboxes to respect our neighbors.

Weather

When you volunteer at Durham Habitat, your work could be outdoors, or might involve projects on the interior of the home.  If it is raining or snowing, our site supervisors will have a plan to make sure it is safe to work. We have tents, heaters, and all manner of equipment to maximize our ability to work in most weather conditions.

With that said, safety is our number one priority. We will cancel a shift if our site supervisors feel that conditions are unsafe to build. If this happens, we will contact volunteers by email and/or phone.

For snow and other weather related events, we generally follow the City of Durham Government closings. If the City is open we are generally open, and if they are closed, we are usually closed.

If you would like to check the status of a build due to weather related events there are two options:

1. You can call our weather hotline at 919-682-0516 and press 2

2. You can email our volunteer team here

Habitat Success Stories

Pearlie's home was so damaged that neighbors thought it was abandoned. Habitat partnered with the City of Durham to replace Pearlie's roof, a damaged wall, and exterior siding. Pearlie said, "It lifts my spirits. Habitat volunteers are beautiful people."
