Each year, Durham Habitat helps nearly 20 families build homes in Durham. Built mostly with volunteer labor, all homes are professionally supervised and built to ensure high quality and consistency. Habitat families provide “sweat equity,” working alongside our volunteers and staff in home construction, and Habitat provides zero-interest mortgages.
New home construction
Our average home has three bedrooms with approximately 1,200 square feet of living space and costs approximately $110,000. Future homeowners select interior features such as flooring, cabinets and counter tops. Habitat homeowners are expected to make monthly mortgage payments of approximately $525.
In addition to building new homes, we rehabilitate abandoned, historic homes. Our construction staff and volunteers include renovation specialists who honor a home’s past while creating a new, modern home for a family.
