Global VillageEach time Habitat builds a home with a family in Durham, a house is sponsored for an equally deserving family in Honduras. Habitat affiliates nationwide are asked to "tithe" 10% to fund Habitat for Humanity International’s work abroad.

Since 1985, Habitat for Humanity of Durham has built more than 206 homes in 13 countries and tithed more than $736,000. Durham Habitat was recognized among the top 25 "tithe" program participants by Habitat for Humanity International.

Durham Habitat has built homes in:

  • The Carribbean: Haiti
  • Latin America: Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador
  • Africa: Tanzania, Malawi, Kenya, Uganda
  • Asia: India, the Phillipines

Each February, Durham Habitat staff and volunteers travel to Honduras to participate in the building process. On these 10-day trips, volunteers work alongside future homeowners and local volunteers. Learn more about our volunteer trips to Honduras.

Habitat Success Stories

Lal is a Burmese refugee who came to Durham after stops in Egypt and Thailand. Lal partnered with Habitat and the Durham Literacy Center to renovate a historic home in East Durham. “There is no more fear,” Lal said. “We won’t have to move again because the home belongs to us.”
