Our Work

Each year, Durham Habitat helps nearly 25 families build homes in Durham. Built mostly with volunteer labor, all homes are professionally supervised and built to ensure high quality and consistency. Habitat families provide “sweat equity,” working alongside our volunteers and staff in home construction, and Habitat provides zero-interest mortgages.

New home

Our average home has three bedrooms with approximately 1,200 square feet of living space. Future homeowners select interior features such as flooring, cabinets and counter tops. Habitat homeowners are expected to make monthly mortgage payments of approximately $650.

We build homes in urban neighborhoods around Downtown Durham, alongside other professionally built and sold homes. Our houses are designed to honor the look and feel of their neighborhoods. They vary in design and size depending on the community and the family's needs. Click the links below to see the progress of each home build.

Habitat Success Stories

Barbara is an elderly neighbor who suffers from COPD. Durham Habitat partnered with the Fuqua School of Business to replace Barbara’s roof and HVAC system. Barbara said,"I thank God that Habitat was able to fix my home because I was unable to do it for myself."
