Bull City Burger and Brewery, Bull Durham Beer Company, Fullsteam Brewery, Ponysaurus Brewing and Triangle Brewing Company are all chipping in 32-ounce cans of specialty styles for the campaign. Those donating more than $75 will receive all five of the cans in a “We CAN Build It” case, along with a Durham Habitat pint glass.

So far the campaign has raised nearly $7,000, and there are only about 20 of the first batch of can cases still available.

Heather Graham, annual fund and communications manager at Habitat for Humanity of Durham, said the breweries have pledged to raise at least $50,000, the cost of a home sponsorship to cover Habitat’s purchase of the building materials.

The breweries plan to reach the $50,000 by releasing five rounds of beer cases. The next release will come out in February, the third will be in June, the fourth in September and the final round will be in December.

“Each round will feature new, unique, specialty beers. And as new craft breweries pop up in Durham, they’ll be invited to join the fun,” Graham said in an email. “Any donors who participate in all five rounds of We CAN Build It will be invited to an exclusive Habitat build day with the brewers."

The current round of beer styles (with brewery descriptions) includes:

Bull City Burger and Brewery’s Durhamer Ale: a beer made with North Carolina malts, Durham water and biscuity malt for a flavor “reminiscent of Burley air-cured chestnut colored tobacco.”

Bull Durham Beer Company’s Lager: an unfiltered lager that “ is refreshingly light in body, and easy to drink.”

Fullsteam’s Lindera: a mildly sweet brown ale brewed with fire roasted Candy Roaster squash, foraged spicebush berries and North Carolina molasses.

Ponysaurus’ Weizenbock: made with equal parts pilsner and wheat malt and “a handful” of chocolate malt, the beer “balances the traditional banana and clove notes from the yeast with the rich bread crust flavor from grains.”

Triangle Brewing’s Belgian Abbey Dubbel: a classic-style Abbey beer that has “a lot of the qualities of a fine red wine.”
