Own a Habitat home

Habitat homes are modest, well-built homes constructed by volunteers from the community and families selected by Habitat. Families finance their homes through no-interest loans from Habitat and pay a monthly mortgage that ranges from $475 - $525.  This cost includes taxes and insurance. There is no down payment.  Instead, families offer a minimum of 250 "sweat equity" hours helping to build their houses and those of their Habitat neighbors.

Habitat home buyer qualifications:

  • U.S. citizen or permanent resident who has lived or worked in Durham County for at least six months
  • Annual income below 60% area median income and steady work history for the past two years
  • Proven need for safe, decent and affordable housing
  • Demonstrate a willingness to partner
