Mother Therese

At Durham Habitat, home sponsors come in all shapes and sizes. Some are major corporations, others are college service groups. And sometimes, they are 90 year-old women with generous hearts and a special sense of how important it is to have a safe place to call home.

In 2009, Durham Habitat met our very own "Mother Teresa" when Therese Bailkey decided to sponsor a Habitat home after her caretaker's application for homeownership was accepted.

Having lost her home twice, Therese appreciates the importance of home. As a teenager, she fled Germany with her family during WWII and later, she was evacuated from her home in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina.

This year, in an effort to spread the love, our Mother Therese is offering a match for our "Love Thy Neighbor" campaign!

All donations given between now and December 26th will be matched up to $5,000.

Habitat Success Stories

Growing up in East Durham, Tora saw the neighborhood decline and bounce back. She was excited to partner with the Streets at Southpoint and Belk to build and purchase her own home in East Durham -- making her part of the neighborhood's revitalization.
