What is AmeriCorps?
AmeriCorps is a national service program that provides thousands of Americans of all ages and backgrounds with educational awards in exchange for a year or two of community service. AmeriCorps members help meet the nation's critical needs in the areas of public safety, education, human needs, and the environment. It was created in 1993 with bi-partisan support by Congress, the President, and community groups nationwide.
What is my commitment?
Members in the 11 month program start their service each August and must complete 1700 hours and complete other program requirements that include trainings that occur out of Durham.
What are the requirements to apply?
The Habitat for Humanity AmeriCorps program is open to all individuals who meet the following qualifications:
18 years of age and older (to meet Habitat requirements)
U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals or lawful permanent resident alien of the U.S.
Have a high school diploma or GED or agree to obtain one while serving.
Transportation and construction experience are helpful, but not required.
Please make sure that your application essay completely describes why you are interested in serving at Habitat.

Skills for the future.

Durham Habitat is currently unable to provide free housing for AmeriCorps members, but we do pay an extra $100 a month housing stipend and do our best to assist new members in finding housing at the start of their service.
What do current AmeriCorps members say about their experience?:"My AmeriCorps experience is one which I would describe as challenging, transforming, and empowering.
