About Us

Our History
Thanks to the encouragement of Worth Lutz, a small group of clergy and laity met in the Spring of 1985 to discuss the development of a Habitat affiliate in Durham, and by the Fall, it was a reality. On October 24, 1985, Durham County Habitat for Humanity came into being, and on the Saturday before Christmas of 1987, the first Durham Habitat homeowners moved into their new home. Although it took over ten more years to begin work on the 50th home, it took only three years beyond that to begin the 100th.

Our Progress
Habitat has broken ground on over 200 homes in Durham since 1985.

Habitat of Durham transforms lives and communities by making homeownership possible in partnership with people who care.

Habitat for Humanity does not discriminate on the basis of gender, race, religion, age, national origin, ancestry, creed, pregnancy, marital or parental status, sexual orientation, or physical, mental, emotional or learning disability.
